Observations

LIGHTS

  • Which mode are the lights on upon arrival?

  • Don't be surprised if there is heaps of algae.

  • This is a fixed program with moments of 100% strength in both channels so it's possibly cause for any higher levels of algae

  • Need brighter lights to setting?

  • Lights over-ride:
Dial on ends of the lights are also the enter button. Depress and hold until lights come on. This brings up the preset #1 "M' which is bright. Hold again to get preset #2 "P" which is usually dimmer, depending on the time of day

    maxpext override

FISH

  • Photos Before. With blinds shut and room lights off preferably 1-2 OVERALL. 2-3 CLOSEUPS on Fish

  • Flowerhorn Cichlid, Silver Dollars, Red Devils, Green and Gold Severums, Convict cichlids, Albino Oscars, Sailfin Plecostomus Catfish, Brown Sucking Cats

  • Details

  • Plan for LARGE WATER CHANGE (70%) with thorough GRAVEL VAC. Use STRESS COAT and BLUE SALTS to guard against chlorine and infection.

  • CONTACT BRUCE IMMEDIATELY

  • Looking good? Place 5-10 Cichlid pellets and tetrabits in and observe how they eat.

  • How's the algae levels on GLASS and ROCKS?

  • Plan for a dip of rocks in bucket of boiling water to sterilise the rocks

  • Check lights are on A for AUTO PROGRAM and nitrate levels.

  • Plan for an "Adrian Special"; BEFORE draining, turn OFF pumps, scrape all of every glass surface and carefully brush clean all rocks Then drain 70% water.

Tests part 1

Setup

  • Step ladder in filter cupboard outside Move statues and coffee table out of the working area. Marlin fish slide to left, metal woman lift over to other one near the kitchen. ROLL back carpet and secure with one of the chairs at the table. Bottom right hand cupboard has 2 X black work mats. Lay them down on floor.

  • TURN OFF power to WAVE-MAKER PUMP in top left corner (switch on roof, next to airpump) (Confirm it was working in the first place before you do)

  • If needed lift lights up by lifting with one hand and pulling cable through the locking piston. May need to unscrew locking nut a little to allow movement

The Drain (50%)

  • UNPLUG WATER WITCH from its timer

  • FIlter service planned?

  • Prepare filter/s to be serviced now before starting DRAIN (we will use the drain water to wash) See FILTER PAGE for instructions for each filter, then come back here to continue DRAIN PROCEDURE

  • THE DRAIN.
Plan for light surface GRAVEL VAC if lots of fish faeces settled on bottom

  • Need Instructions?

  • remove FLEX TIE from tank end (with the suction cups and PROTECTION STRAINER) Fix drain hose to INSIDE of the tank. One of the middle access points with handles on cover glass is best. Be sure to use all 3 suction cups to secure it in place

  • "WHEEL" out hose to either one of the drains outside (the furthest one if doing a filter clean) and place into drain

  • Start SYPHON by cupping hand over end of the hose and sucking for 2-3 seconds. You should feel the load ease as it starts pushing air out. Place in drain and wait to confirm flow is strong

  • Back at tank check the suction end of the hose is at planned drain level (normally 60%, NB, no lower than the filter intake pipe in back left) and that all suction cups are fixed.

  • Need instructions?

  • remove FLEX TIE from tank end (with the suction cups and basket strainer fitting) and Fix drain hose to OUTSIDE left end of the tank. Be sure to use all 3 suction cups to secure

  • "WHEEL" out hose to either one of the drains outside (the furthest one if doing a filter clean) and place into drain

  • Back at tank, UNSCREW PROTECTION STRAINER and insert GRAVEL VACUUM

  • VACUUM lightly on surface of gravel. BRAKE syphon to prevent sand sucking up)

  • When finished. STOP SYPHON and remove VACUUM.

  • Reattach BASKET STRAINER and fix end inside tank at planned drain point (NB, no lower than the filter intake pipe in back left)

  • To start SYPHON, "caterpillar" ripple the hose back from tank to push the water remaining in hose out and thus drawing out new water from the tank.

  • % Size of Water Change

Tests part 1

  • TEMPERATURE test (ideal 25 - 26.5 C) thermometer on control unit. Press up and down arrows to scroll to temp

  • Temperature

  • Is FILTER 3 PUMP switched on/functioning properly?
(If no flow through the heater then it will only heat the water inside it and switch off)

  • This most likely the cause of the low temp, HOWEVER: NB: if filter has been off then most likely the water inside is off so DO NOT TURN ON FILTER YET! Clean filter first before proceeding further.

  • Once restarted does the heater thermostat light come on?

  • Is the INLINE HEATER plugged in/switched on? (On out line of Eheim 3 filter)
• Plug in and switch on heater now

  • Is the thermostat set at correct position?

  • Unplug faulty unit. Notify Bruce to arrange replacement.

  • Increase THERMOSTAT on the heater by a CONSERVATIVE AMOUNT (Max 2 degrees) to bring it up within the range (see above) and make note of how much.

  • Increased THERMOSTAT by:

  • Is the INLINE HEATER plugged in/switched on? (On out line of Eheim 3 filter)
• Plug in and switch on heater now

  • Is the thermostat set at correct position?

  • Unplug faulty unit. Notify Bruce to arrange replacement.

  • Increase THERMOSTAT on the heater by a CONSERVATIVE AMOUNT (Max 2 degrees) to bring it up within the range (see above) and make note of how much.

  • Increased THERMOSTAT by:

  • A bit too cool. Has an auto water change happened recently? (Normally after 4pm)

  • Is the IN-LINE HEATER indicator light on?

  • This is most likely the cause of the cooler reading and the heater is in the process of heating the tank but up to temperature

  • Does increasing the thermostat by 1 or 2 degrees bring the light on?

  • Then probably this is ok. Leave in this position and make note of how much you increased.

  • Notify Bruce to arrange replacement. Warm up tank with soul heater to around 26-27 degrees top help buy time

  • too warm. Are THERMOSTATS on heater functioning?
(Does the indicator light come on and off when you turn the thermostat setting up and down?)

  • Decrease THERMOSTAT (anticlockwise) on the heater by the SUITABLE AMOUNT to bring it down within the range (see above) and note by how much.

  • Decreased THERMOSTAT by:

  • if the THERMOSTAT doesn't respond to being turned down then better to have a cool tank than risking cooking the fish. Unplug faulty unit. Notify Bruce to arrange replacement.

  • Good. Refill with HEATER or KETTLES OF BOILED WATER (boiling water tap in kitchen) particularly in COLD months.

  • Rinse 2 TEST VIALS in tank water: pH (square vial) and GH (large round vial) MEASURE 5ml in each and SET ASIDE for later.

The Refill

The Refill.

  • MAINS LINE TAP: SILVER HOSE mounted on top right hand wall. Affix with suction cups in tank horizontally so as to reduce disruption of sand. Open Black INLINE TAP first (parallel to flow) and then open up the right hand COLD tap to desirable rate NB, can be fairly fast but don't over do it; the pressure here is really strong.

  • SOUP HEATER in COLD months or in large water changes. Can use the power point of the wave maker on ceiling

Things To Do During Refill

  • CLEAN GLASS; easiest at LOW WATER LEVELS. SOFT ALGAE lightly with MAGNET CLEANER (MAKE SURE BOTH SIDES ARE SUPER CLEAN FIRST!! And DONT GO CLOSE TO BOTTOM as SAND will get caught up!). Even if you can't see any, best to do a light pass over the whole thing. DARK GREEN spots: best with SCRAPER Or LONG HANDLED SCRUBBERS ON SITE.

  • SMOOTH out sand; remove built up areas, cover bare spots. Can use long handled algae scrubs (just shake out sand thoroughly afterwards)

  • Reposition AIRCURTAIN where fish have disturbed it

  • FILTER SERVICE?

  • Which one/s?

Tests (continued)

  • pH Test? 3 drops in 5ml. (ideal range 6.8-7.1)

  • pH

  • GH TEST. number of drops to turn from ORANGE to GREEN

  • GH (ideal range 5-8)

  • SIZE of water change:

  • ADD 8 teaspoons CONDITIONING SALTS (NB these salts stain the gravel and rocks so mix in bucket with boiling water first before pouring in)

  • ADD 15 teaspoons CONDITIONING SALTS (NB these salts stain the gravel and rocks so mix in bucket with boiling water first before pouring in)

  • ADD 25 teaspoons CONDITIONING SALTS (NB these salts stain the gravel and rocks so mix in bucket with boiling water first before pouring in)

  • SIZE of water change:

  • ADD 15 teaspoons CONDITIONING SALTS (NB these salts stain the gravel and rocks so mix in bucket with boiling water first before pouring in)

  • ADD 25 teaspoons CONDITIONING SALTS (NB these salts stain the gravel and rocks so mix in bucket with boiling water first before pouring in)

  • ADD 35 teaspoons CONDITIONING SALTS (NB these salts stain the gravel and rocks so mix in bucket with boiling water first before pouring in)

  • Depending on SIZE of WATER CHANGE, add NO SALTS and let WC reduce the GH to within desired range

  • NITRATE TEST (only upon request or when suspicious behaviour; overly scratching eg.)

  • Nitrate level (ppm)

Additives

  • SALTS ADDED?

  • How many teaspoons?

Packing up

SUPPLIES; ANY REFILLING TO BE DONE IN SINK OR OUTSIDE!

  • SALTS REFILL?

  • FOOD REPLACE/ REFILL? (Tetrabits, Hikari Cichlid Pellets)

  • WHICH KIND?

  • Will any need replacing next month?

Equipment Check

AUTO WATER CHANGE SYSTEM

  • WATER WITCH TIMER on correct time

  • If it looks like the timer is faulty and no replacement handy, remove timer and plug directly in to power board. Make an ACTION here to notify Bruce

  • RAINBIRD AUTO DRAIN SOLENOID on correct time?

  • Make an ACTION here to notify Bruce

  • TEST RAINBIRD AUTO DRAIN
LIGHTS

  • lights on correct time?

  • Contact Bruce

  • Lights returned to MODE A?

  • Lights over-ride:
Dial on ends of the lights are also the enter button. Depress and hold until lights come on. This brings up the preset #1 "M' which is bright. Hold again to get preset #2 "P" which is usually dimmer, depending on the time of day

    maxpext override
  • If you have lifted the LIGHTS then gently lower them back down to the height you found them. Take the weight in one hand while using the other to depress the locking piston (may need to unscrew the locking nut on the piston) and lower the end of the light

  • Notes. Any extra work performed?

FINAL CHECKS

  • HEATER and FILTER PUMPS ON and functioning?

  • OUTSIDE GLASS, CABINETRY etc CLEAN & DRY?

  • BOTH FILLER HOSE LINE taps closed? (Black inline should be perpendicular to flow)

  • WAVE MAKER PUMP turned back on and functioning?

  • Got your: BASKET STRAINER? TOOTH BRUSH? TEASPOON?

  • After Photos With blinds shut and room lights off preferably 1-2 OVERALL. 2-3 CLOSEUPS on Fish

  • Time Finished
