Total quantity <250L or <1000L PG III, per Table 1 AS 3780 – The Storage & Handling of Corrosive Substances

Shape Note: If quantity greater than Minor Storage above refer to Part B – Package Storage (page 2).

KEY REQUIREMENTS per AS 3780

  • Supply of water available nearby e.g. for personal or area decontamination

  • Adequate ventilation in storage and handling areas

  • Storage NOT in proximity to sources of heat

  • Containers kept closed when not in use

  • Containers stored in a way to avoid spillage

  • Containers not kept near incompatible substances (Refer MSDS’s)

  • Storage surface is resistant to damage, if a spill occurs

  • Containers appropriate for use and clearly labelled e.g. Class 8 diamond

  • Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) available as required by MSDS’s.

  • All spills or leaks cleaned up immediately

  • 421 - DG storage protected from impact eg barriers if vehicular traffic

  • 434 - Spill kit accessible at all times (could be shared with other storage areas)

  • 438 – MSDS’s readily accessible for all DG’s eg in vicinity of use

  • 442 - Register of DG’s maintained & up to date

  • COP 39.3 - Quantity of DG’s kept to minimum required eg. Limited to one week’s supply

  • - Decanting only in designated bunded area or spill trays

  • - Any recent incidents involving DG’s? If so please specify

Part B - PACKAGE STORAGE

  • Definition of Package Storage: per Clause 1.4.16 AS 3780 – The Storage & Handling of Corrosive Substances >250L of corrosives in individual packages and not exceeding 250L each Note: See Part A (page 1) for Glossary &” additional requirements, per Vic. DG Regulations & Code”

KEY REQUIREMENTS per AS 3780

  • Store located on the ground floor of building

  • Store has at least 2 exits

  • Aisles in store kept clear at all times

  • Packages stored so that they cannot fall or spill outside the bunded area

  • Racks or shelving designed and constructed to prevent pooling or accumulation of liquid except where designed as spill trays or compounds.

  • Rack layout provides clear passage for escape of personnel e.g aisle width at least 1.2m wide

  • If packages stored in stacks, they cannot collapse or cause bottom layers to crush & damage

  • Storage and handling areas where flammable gases may be generated e.g. lead acid battery charging stations, have equipment appropriate for those hazardous gases e.g. flame proof electrics

  • There is a safety shower & eye wash station within 10m, but not nearer than 2m where corrosives are opened.
