Launch Site Inspection Criteria & Standards

  • Prior to issuing permits for a fireworks display, plans for the fireworks display, inspections of the display site and demonstration of the display operations shall be approved. A plan establishing procedures to follow and actions to be taken in the event that a shell fails to ignite in, or discharge from, a mortar or fails to function over the fallout area or other malfunctions shall be provided to the fire code official (IFC 5608.1)

Prior to Event

  • Fireworks must be stored in a dry location, and must be constantly attended while stored on-site

  • All fireworks must be inspected after delivery to event location. Shells having tears, leaks, broken fuses, or indications of water damage shall not be fired. Damaged shells shall be returned to the manufacturer, or disposed of safely off-site

  • Aerial shells must be pre-checked for proper fit in mortar tubes

  • All launching devices, mortar tubes, platforms, etc. must be secured from wind and accidental tip over

  • All components of electrical igniting equipment must be visually inspected

  • Temporary storage of fireworks is only permitted in the appropriate "ready boxes" and stored 25 feet away from the mortar placement. If shells are loaded into mortar tubes prior to the show, no separation is required

Post Event

  • The firing crew must conduct an inspection of the fallout area to verify that there are no unexploded aerial shells or live components. Following night events, an additional inspection at first light may occur. A report of these fallout inspections shall be provided in writing to the fire code official by the certified Fireworks Display operator (Attach documentation)

  • The firing crew must ensure that the launch area is clear of all fireworks debris and that such debris is disposed of in a safe manner
