  • Are all of the relevant documents in the list overleaf available?

  • If not agree a timetable and responsibility for their production.

  • The Headteacher should provide an action plan detailing who will produce the missing documents and by when.

  • Has the schools health and safety policy statement been considered by the GB within the last academic year? It should be signed and dated.

  • If no then the statement should be reviewed by the GB as soon as possible and a signed and dated copy placed on record and drawn to the attention of all staff.

  • Are all of the people/posts referred to in the organisation available to discharge their responsibilities?

  • If there any staff vacancies that undermine the arrangements then Responsibilities may need to be reassigned and the document updated.

  • Have the risk assessments been personalised to your school rather than being a simple copy of a generic risk assessment? Make sure they are signed and dated.<br>Select a risk assessment – ensure it relevant and appropriate to your school.<br>Have all hazards been addressed by a risk assessment, if not seek clarification.

  • Has a first aid needs assessment been carried out and implemented? Ensure first aid is provided in line with the needs assessment and that staff have been trained appropriately.

  • Are staff training records relevant to health and safety up to date? Ask how it is known if staff are competent to undertake the roles assigned to them by the organisation.

  • Does the head teacher have ready access to the Bexley Safer Schools web page?

  • Has the new intake of staff received health and safety induction training? <br>To include:<br>the school safety policy<br>fire safety procedures<br>relevant risk assessments and safe working procedures

  • Is house keeping generally good?

  • Please explain why, and set out what improvements could be made, who will do it, and when.

  • Has the head teacher recently completed an internal monitoring exercise?

  • For schools where you are the employer do you have arrangements for obtaining advice from a competent person? <br>You need to have arrangements for seeking advice from a competent consultant. You may freely use the saferschools website as well.

  • Is there a need for further advice or guidance to help your school improve health and safety?

  • Community and Voluntary Controlled schools can e-mail schools.healthandsafety@bexley.gov.uk for advice or guidance. Other schools should consult their own appointed health & safety advisor.

  • Does your school use EVOLVE for monitoring Educational Visits ?<br>All schools have access to EVOLVE – you can use this to monitor H&S performance.<br>

  • You may also wish to review information from your accident reports or audits (including those carried out by London Borough of Bexley Health and Safety Advisors where appropriate).

    Record your findings, sign and date the record and retain to demonstrate an active involvement. Remember to follow up at a later date to ensure that agreed actions have been completed.
