Water Balancing
Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)
Source Water
-
Take a large sample of source water (from the tap) and dip in the TDS meter
-
The source water is around 400-500ppm in Essex
-
TDS result (source water)
Pool Water
-
Take a large sample of pool water and dip in the TDS meter
-
The result of pool water should be within 1000ppm of the source water
-
TDS result (pool water)
Calcium Hardness
-
Take a 10ml sample of pool water in a vial
-
Put vial into Pooltest 6 and select "CaH" to blank
-
Remove from vial and crush a Calcicol No. 1 tablet in the vial
-
Crush a Calcicol No. 2 tablet in the vial
-
Place in photometer and press "CaH" again, wait 2 minutes
-
Calcium Hardness result (mg/l)
-
Product required:
https://www.ukpoolstore.co.uk/acatalog/Swimming_Pool_calcium_hardness_Plus_-_UKPS_chemicals.html -
Pre-dissolve the product in a clean plastic container at a maximum rate of 100g of product per 2.2 gallons (10 litres) of clean warm water. Stir well to ensure the product is fully dissolved. Carefully add the resulting solution to the pool whilst the pump(s) are turned 'on', preferably near to the water inlets to aid distribution.
-
After a minimum of 8 hours, recheck the calcium hardness level and if necessary repeat the treatment until the ideal level is established. Please note a number of treatments may be required.
-
1.1kg worth of granules are required for a pool with 99,000 litres of water
-
Calcium needs to be removed from pool
Total Alkalinity
-
Take a 10ml sample of pool water in a vial
-
Put vial into Pooltest 6 and select "TA" to blank
-
Remove from vial and crush a Alkaphot tablet in the vial
-
Place in photometer and press "TA" again, wait 1 minute
-
Total Alkalinity result (mg/l)
-
Bicarbonate of soda is required to be added to the pool
-
Use the following website to calculate the amount of bicarbonate of soda to use:
https://www.poolandspacentre.co.uk/help/pool-adjustments.html -
Has bicarbonate of soda been added to the pool?
-
Dry acid (sodium bisulphate) is required to be added to the pool
-
Use the following website to calculate the amount of dry acid (sodium bisulphate) to use:
https://www.poolandspacentre.co.uk/help/pool-adjustments.html -
Our pool has 99,000 litres of water
-
Has dry acid (sodium bisulphate) been added to the pool?
Balanced Water Testing
-
Use Langelier Saturation Index
-
TF - Temperature factor
CF - Calcium Hardness factor
AF - Total Alkalinity factor
BWR - Balanced Water Result -
pH + TF + CF + AF - TDSF = BWR (formula)
-
7.2 + 0.7 + 1.5 + 2.0 – 12.2 = -0.8 (example)
