  • The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has released information regarding an accident that occurred during a routine HGV maintenance task. At Central England Municipals Limited (CEML), an apprentice employee was working alongside an experienced mechanic replacing air suspension bags beneath a 39,000kg trailer. The air suspension bag was still under pressure and ejected sideways striking the injured person.

    The employee suffered a fractured skull and was placed in an induced coma as a result of this incident. In order to prevent a similar accident please read the following information carefully.

  • To minimise the likelihood of an accident occurring during the replacement of air bags there are precautions that need to be taken.

  • 1. Visual inspection of remaining air bags for defects. Check the other air bags for signs of damage, remember the remaining air bags are under more pressure due to the failure of the defective one.

  • 2. Isolation of air supply into air bag. Before attempting to remove the defective air bag always remove the air supply/hose.

  • 3. Securing of air bag before reconnecting air supply. It is imperative that the air bag is secured by all bolts top and bottom before the air supply/hose is reconnected.

  • As a mechanic working for McPherson Ltd you will be required to replace unit and Trailer air bags regularly, it is your legal duty to follow these precautions and to work as safely as possible.
