  • Store tools in the proper manner. Keep tool storage organized in a gang box or hanging on a connex shelf.

  • All operators and helpers must wear safety glasses, appropriate gloves, safety boots, and hard hats. Make sure no loose jewelry or clothes are worn along with no loose hair. For all high noise creating power tools ear plugs are required. For any tool that creates flying debris/ sparks a face shield is required in addition to safety glasses underneath.

  • Select the proper tool and attachments for the job. Use the correct handle for all tools. Tools are to be properly assembled, guards are to be in place, and use grinding wheels with the correct RPMs.

  • Perform only the procedures intended for the hand tool by the manufacturer. Select appropriate gearing and power settings for the procedure to be performed.

  • Deenergize the tool when changing attachments, performing maintenance or when leaving unattended. Or while going up ladders, stairs, or handing from one person to another.

  • Keep the area clean where work is being performed. Remove all tripping and slipping hazards. Place the tool back in storage if not being used.

  • Only use tools that are in good condition. Tools should be inspected daily for frayed wires, missing guards, and loose/cracked parts. Inspect tools for proper grounding.

  • Inspect for tools being carried by its cord, being yanked to be disconnected from a receptacle, or being raised by its cord. Check for tools on the tops of ladders, in the bottom of lifts, or on the top of duct/pipe.

  • Perform work in low traffic areas and out of the route of traffic. Watch out for the safety of other employees. Be aware of the surroundings, tool conditions, and material conditions where the work is being performed. Barricade areas, place signs, and notify others of the area where work is being performed. Check for work in doorways and other side of doors.

  • Use a firm grip on the tool and position your body so that the work can be performed safely and efficiently. Be certain to position your body outside of potential kickback and drop areas. Check for body parts around moving parts, and fingers on switch buttons during start up. Ensure that sharp edged tools are carried or on tool belts pointed downward.

  • Perform work on level ground. Secure all materials with pipe stands so work can be performed with 2 hands. Use a helper to secure materials or catch any drop offs if necessary.

  • Check for flammable materials in the area. Have a fire extinguisher on hand when performing work that produces sparks.
