  • Perform only the tasks that the manufacturer for each specific ladder intends. Do not tie ladders together to make longer sections or take apart extension ladders. Do not lean stepladders like an extension ladder.

  • Select the appropriate ladder for the job. Select the appropriate type and rating.

  • Ladders have been inspected monthly. (Indicated by the proper color safety tape)

  • Ladders have been inspected prior to use. Inspect rungs, cleats, steps, braces, and screws. Inspect that there are no warped, bent, or corroded parts, frayed ropes, or faulty components. Remove all oil, grease, and dirt. Inspect ladders for proper danger and caution stickers. Tag out of service on all damaged ladders.

  • Visually inspect the area around the ladder for debris, material, or any potential hazard by way of falling. Inspect for objects left on ladders or at elevation. (On top of duct, equipments, pipe)

  • Place the ladder on a level surface with the legs and spreader bar completely out. Secure ladders otherwise. Check for slippery surfaces. For extension ladders the pads for a firm base and the spikes for a soft base. Visually inspect that ladders are properly lifted/carried so as to not hit other employees or damage items on the job.

  • Use both hands to climb up a ladder and always face the ladder when climbing and descending. Inspect for overextending, reaching, climbing up one side and descending down another, and straddling the top of a ladder.

  • Inspect for being on the top 2 steps of a ladders.

  • Use fall protection on any ladder when exposed to falls over 6 feet.

  • Inspect for ladders in high traffic areas such as in doorways or behind closed doors. Place barricades if work needs to be done in these areas.

  • Place extension ladders ΒΌ of the height of the ladder away from the wall and 3 feet above access points. Access point must be tied off.

  • Ladders are away from electrical hazards.

  • Perform work on a ladder only when a lift is unavailable or not feasible.

  • Inspect for proper storage. (Stored Horizontal not Vertical)

  • Inspect for tools or objects being carried up ladders. (Energized tools in particular)
