Store Safety

  • Each year Car-X Teammates lose valuable time and money due to accidents and injuries on the job

  • • Trying to catch up on jobs where we are behind

  • • Failure of Management to routinely check for unsafe situations

Safety meetings are part of the monthly Store meetings and must be included in the agenda.

  • Below are several general safety rules that must be followed at all times:

  • Wear eye protection at all times while in the Shop area and during any operation that could endanger your eyes. This includes using a chisel or other situations where your eyes are subject to foreign matter

  • Wear full face protection when using a torch

  • When using a mig welder, wear proper approved eye protection as well as during other operations where severe hazards are present

  • Use the right tool for the job. There is usually a “best” tool for the job – use it, even if it means an extra trip to your toolbox

  • Keep guards or shield in place. If a power tool has a shield or safety guard, make sure it is in place and adjusted properly

  • Lift with your legs, not your back. There are many heavy parts you deal with daily. When lifting, bend at your knees while keeping your back straight and use a back brace. For heavier parts and assemblies, ask for help

  • Lift a vehicle slowly and safely. A typical car can weigh between one and four tons. NEVER work under a vehicle that is not supported properly. ALWAYS lower a vehicle on the lift safety locks before servicing.

  • Dress like a Technician. Remove rings, bracelets, necklaces, watches and other jewelry, which can get caught in moving parts causing injury

  • Never stir up asbestos dust. Asbestos dust (particles found in brake friction material) are powerful cancer-causing agents. Use the supplied safety equipment for asbestos dust control. NEVER use the compressed air to blow the dust off these parts

  • Work like a professional. There may be a tendency to want to work too fast because the Store is busy. There isn’t a problem with picking up your pace as long as work practices are not forgotten

  • Wear proper footwear. While steel-toed shoes are not required, they are acceptable for use in our Shop environment. Heavy leather work shoes afford more protection than canvas or cloth

  • Sneakers are not allowed. Take care of your feet, you count on them to get you where you need to go

  • Avoid loose or dangling clothing

  • Do not twist your body when carrying a load. Instead, pivot your feet to help prevent strain to your spine

  • Work with objects, parts and tools between chest and waist height when standing

  • These safety rules are not all-inclusive but represent a good overview of what is involved in working safely at Car-X
