Preventing Strains and Sprains (Soft-Tissue Injuries)

  • Are trays are used to balance heavy loads.

  • Have high reach been identified and appropriately equipped (for example, with footstools, steps at pass through, and ladders)?

  • Is "clean as you go" is practised by all staff?

  • Are work areas clear and well organised?

Preventing Serious Cuts and Lacerations

  • Is the slicer blade guard in good order and used by employees?

  • Is broken glass kept separate from other garbage and handled with care?

Hazardous Chemicals

  • Are material safety data sheets (MSDSs) up-to-date and readily available? (Ask random staff member where to access MSDS)

  • Are labels [used on chemicals] removed from their original containers and put on decanted items, so staff understand what is in the decanted items?

  • Are eye wash bottles available?

  • Are all chemicals stored correctly?

Preventing a Serious Burn Injury

  • Are hot oil and disposal of hot oil procedures are posted?

  • Are goggles and neoprene gloves available and used when handling hot oil?

  • Are oven mitts used by staff handling hot objects?

  • Are staff trained in and aware of when to use appropriate protective equipment?

First Aid

  • Is an appropriate first aid kit accessible to all employees, kept clean, dry and fully stocked, according to Regulation standards.

  • Is the first aid log book completed, up-to-date, and kept in the first aid kit?
